Cop critical after attempted hijacking
A policeman is in critical condition in hospital on Thursday night after he was shot when armed robbers tried to hijack his vehicle.
Police spokeswoman Inspector Kym Cloete said four armed men entered and robbed a business in Van Wyk Street in Roodepoort at 3.30pm.
Leaving the premises, they attempted to hijack a policeman who was in an unmarked vehicle.
A rapid response vehicle drove by and shots were fired at the robbers who retaliated with gunfire. The policeman in the vehicle was seriously hurt, including sustaining a wound to the face.
One of the robbers was wounded in the shoot out and was arrested.
Two firearms were confiscated and an undisclosed amount of money were recovered by police.
The search is still on for the three robbers who got away.
