Fugitives arrested in veld
Sixteen fugitives were arrested after they were found living in open spaces in Honeydew, Johannesburg metro police said on Thursday.
Spokeswoman Phindani Tebeila said the arrests were made after the metro police in partnership with City Parks conducted an operation targeting open spaces in the suburb.
A number of people were found living in the open spaces and when their fingerprints were checked most of them were found to be criminals wanted for crimes ranging from rape and assault to housebreaking .
Some of the people arrested were wanted for crimes committed as far back as 1983 while others were wanted for offences in KwaZulu-Natal.
Four people were found in possession of stolen household appliances that included sound systems and DVD players.
The arrested people will appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Friday. They will face charges of illegally camping in an open space owned by the council.
