ANC rejects motion to fix pot holes and traffic lights

ANC rejects motion to fix pot holes and traffic lights.

On May 27, 2010, DA Councillor Michael Sun of the City of Johannesburg proposed a motion in the monthly Joburg Council meeting for the City to urgently repair pot holes and malfunctioning traffic lights. It was rejected.

The motion was first submitted to Council in March 2010 but only tabled last week during the monthly Council meeting. The motion seeks for the City to repair pot holes and malfunctioning traffic lights which would also lessen the City's risk on damages claims and increased insurance premiums.

Councillor Sun said “The purpose of my motion was simple – fix the potholes and traffic lights! Everyday our residents travel on roads that are full of pot holes and very often traffic congestion is caused as a result of malfunctioning traffic lights, both of which are dangerous and cause unnecessary damages to the public."

During the debate, reply from the ruling party was that the motion was aimed at gaining political mileage, which Councillor Sun rejected; he said “Pot holes have no political affiliation and certainly the motion is not intended to score any political points. It is simply an honest attempt to get the City to take action and repair pot holes."

The City has a claim policy of which could compensate road users for damages caused by a pot hole on the road. Councillor Sun also pointed that Council could face substantial amounts in claims if the condition of our roads are not fixed.

One indirect financial consequence would be that insurance premiums on the City are increased. By reducing the risk of claims the City could save hundreds of thousands of Rands.

Councillor Sun also pointed out to the Council that pot holes and malfunctioning traffic lights are realistic problems which our residents are facing on a daily basis, “Let our City be a city of Gold and not a City of Holes”.

After the debate, the motion was rejected by the ANC as they hold the majority in Council.
