Roadblocks conducted across Gauteng
Roadblocks have been launched across Gauteng and they are going to be conducted throughout the festive season, provincial police said on Saturday.
Spokesman Govindsamy Marimuthoo said roadblocks have already been set up across the province from the beginning of the weekend and that Gauteng police commissioner Perumal Naidoo has already visited some of them.
These roadblocks have since resulted in the arrest of 69 people since their launch and 22 vehicles suspected to have either been stolen of hijacked were recovered.
Three trailers were also recovered while two motorcycles were confiscated after being found operating under invalid registration plates.
Marimuthoo said the roadblocks conducted by hundreds of police officers will continue throughout the festive season to ensure a safe holiday season.
He said the roadblocks campaign was merely one of the province's crime fighting strategies.
Marimuthoo said during Naidoo's visits at some of the roadblocks, the commissioner thanked communities for their co-operation and confidence in the police.
He also thanked the many officers on duty for their efforts during the campaign.
Naidoo wished members of the public a great festive season, but he also warned that police will not hesitate to be tough on criminals.
He said those who interfered with other people's rights will also be dealt with.
