André Rieu on stage at Sun City SuperBowl
He's bigger than Elton John, Coldplay and Britney Spears, and the Dutch violin star André Rieu, one of the world’s most popular performers, has waltzed his way to success with a concert in South Africa too.
André Rieu together with his Johann Strauss Orchestra and many soloists kicked off their South African tour with an enchanting new show at the Sun City Super Bowl on April 24. Known as the King of Waltz, André performs in sold-out venues all over the world, and is the Number One Selling male performer of 2009.
Fans came from all over to see André in concert, two of his fans are twins from East London Shendle and Simone Harnden who play violin and were inspired to take it up after watching an André Rieu concert a few years ago. He is their hero and it was a dream that came true for them to be at one of his concerts. They even wore ball gowns so they could be like the ladies in the orchestra.
The chart-topping Dutch violinist and conductor has sold close to 30 million albums globally, and has broken all classical concert records, packing stadiums with over 700,000 adoring fans each year.
André Rieu is renowned for the uplifting and festive atmosphere at his concerts that may annoy some purists (he encourages his audience to get out of their seats and waltz in the aisles), his ability to make classical music accessible and fun has earned the 60-year-old the unlikely status as Classical Sex Symbol.
